Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew you that you are an hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not strewed:
We are accountable for even the smallest things which we are entrusted; our salvation, redemption, our spiritual gifts..n material blessings; work of hands, wealth, our knowledge all give us an opportunity to serve Christ. We must never forget that we serve a Master in heaven whom we will meet to give an account; so don't hide our talents!
Usually, people with a lot of privileges misuse or neglect it but in this parable the emphasize is on the one who was entrusted with only one talent. Notice, although he was least favoured among the three his task, his challenge, his responsibility was easiest, hence severe judgement. He must have heard the account of the two, how richly they have been rewarded for their work/service. But had no qualms to render his account; although he would know by now how unsatisfactory it is, and notice this ….he starts off by defending his behaviour by speaking out his view of his lord's character. He says "I know thee that thou art an hard man”; he choose to believe that his lord was tough, harsh, and one who taxes his servants above what the servants can do. Is it not the same today we see people daring to call their perception and impudence as knowledge? We read in Psalms 50:21 that men regard God in there own perverted views not as He is.
"Reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed is kind of a proverb, meaning a to get results without sufficient means. The slave is bringing a charge against his master, that he was making himself rich by others' hardwork; and that he expected gain from where he had not laboured. Do we blame God for our faults??
How many times have we compared ourselves our talents to others? Forget about material blessings for now, lets talk about the spiritual things, like revelation of Christ, the manifestations of holy spirit through another person. Lets bless all those who are gifted and used by God!! When we are not ready to accept out mistakes, we may be ripped off what we are given!! He had a choice to repent at the sight of where he has made a mistake, he could have acknowledged before God saying here is where I have made a mistake…
We also have a choice in life….let us choose to repent and return to our Lord if we have failed..What is our attitude in accepting our failures?
I know I have been like the slave with a single talent, have failed in many areas, terribly failed and passed on my our perceived views of Christ in unspoken words !!
But today I desire to set back with Christ to e faithful in the little he has given..the easiest task I have may be to greet and smile at God’s children!!
God Bless
